Category 6 cable is the next genertion for premises wiring systems. It is still made up of 4 sets of copper wire, but its performance standards are much higher than either Category 5 or Category 5e wiring products. While Cat 6 cabling is the defacto standard for all Gigabit Ethernet applications, an upcoming standard (Cat 6a) will provide operating frequency compatibility up to 500 MHz and accomodate up to 10 Gbit/s data throughput.
